As a personal stylist I get a behind the curtain glimpse into the body image issues that too many of us women carry around, and I gotta say its pretty disheartening hearing the words come out of womens’ mouths. Sure we think these things in our own heads, but when you hear it first hand, its heartbreaking.
I’ll never forget the day I worked with a size 6 yummy mummy, I mean she could’ve been a bikini model, she was totally banging! I asked, as I always do, is there anything about your body that you need to cover or feel self-conscious about? Over the years I’ve heard all manner of responses to this question, a lot of the time women refer to their undefined upper arms ‘tuckshop arms, bingo wings’ call them what you will.
Well I knew we were all doomed at the exact moment that this beautiful goddess said ‘Yes my arms are too skinny, I need to wear things with sleeves to cover them up’. Meanwhile, I had been secretly admiring her gorgeous toned arms all morning, and I told her so after hearing that.
As someone who has always had a love-hate relationship with her body, I found these stats below to be a great perspective teacher and by the end I was really overwhelmed with love and gratitude for my body. Use these as a gentle reminder the next time you’re shaming on your thighs, or shunning your tubby tummy (or thinking your arms are too skinny!)
What our bodies do in a day is truly amazing, so let’s all try to stop focusing on the flabby bits, and start celebrating the magic and wonder of these amazing vessels!
